Why I’ll never buy a plain white t-shirt again
When did we all start dressing the same?
The other day, I messaged a stylish woman I follow on Instagram to ask where she’d got the incredible jumpsuit she was wearing in her Stories. It was navy blue, there were palm trees and tassels. I knew that I had to have it immediately.
Now, I’m sitting here in a heatwave that’s making it far too sweaty to wear what is essentially a long-sleeved all-in-one shellsuit slash fire hazard, asking myself some questions. Why did I send that DM? Why did I want to wear the exact same thing as someone else?
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with being inspired by other folk’s fashion choices. Twas ever thus. But, more and more, we seem to be moving away from inspiration and gravitating towards snapping up the precise items they own - whether friend or famous person. What is it that’s making us all want to dress exactly like one another in a world that produces 150 billion garments a year?
